Stokes Cycling Club is a new cycling group set up for people and families to enjoy organised cycling rides in
and around Bradley Stoke and beyond for the purpose of pleasure and enjoyment. We are affiliated to the national
Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) and enjoy many of their superb and exciting benefits.
For more details about the club and to become a member see the About Us page and
the Membership page.
Everyone had great fun on the Stokes Cycling Club’s first mountain bike ride last month, and after requests for
more, they are running another on Saturday 22nd October at 1400 from the Bradley Stoke Leisure centre. It will be
about 12 miles long, goes to Tockington and Old down, and is mainly on tracks and bridleways, so a mountain bike is
required, but it won’t be too technical for beginners.
The ride leader, mountain bike coach Andy Parker, said
The first ride was great fun, everyone had a good time, and I was able to help some people with their
technique. Everyone came back with a smile on their face!
Rider Richard Burton, said
Andy knew about tracks that I didn’t even know existed, and helped me improve my riding. It was a great
ride and a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to the next one.
If you fancy some fun riding with a friendly local bike club, come along. And if you aren’t into mountain biking,
check out our web site for our other rides, with everything from family rides to fifty milers and everything in between.
We joined Friends Of Jubilee Green as they ran their "Summer Of Fun" event for 5-12 year olds. We were on hand to
provided free bike checkups and give out information about the club. Then at 12 we headed off for a 5 1/2 mile family
ride to Bakers Ground in Stoke Gifford. This is what Michelle chair and trustee of Friends Of Jubliee Green had to say about the
ride as she joined us for the first time:
The family bike ride to a park in Stoke Gifford saw a healthy 14 people set off despite the threat of rain.
After a quick stop in the park in Bakers Ground to play and grab a sandwich the brave riders set off on their return
journey. Unfortunately, 2 lampposts got in the way of two of the younger riders but after a quick hug they were
eager to set off again.
It was a pleasure to work with Stokes Cycling Club, the bike checkups were very popular and we saw lots of families
arriving by bike specifically to use this valuable community service. I want to thank the club for giving up their
Saturday morning to join our event, for moving a previously planned ride and for sharing their bike maintenance skills
with the community. I look forward to working with you all at our events next year!
Come along to the Friends Of Jubilee Green Summer Of Fun event. There'll be a range of activities on offer
for children aged 5-12. Stokes Cycling Club will be offering free bike checks. Then at 12 we'll be heading
off for a family friendly ride over to Stoke Gifford.
Despite the failure of the big screen hired in by a third party contractor, everyone seemed to have a good time.
There were approximaely 1000 people in attendence during the course of the day. As the weather picked up in the afternoon
we had a lot of interest in the club.
Our first treasure hunt was a great success, we had 84 riders starting the hunt and everyone seemed to have great time.
The winners of the hunt were as follows:
- 1st - The Robinson Racers with 32
- 2nd - Barrett Family and Vindel Family with 31
- 3rd - Abi Mathias, BS Fit Club and an unknown team with 30
- 7th - Easter Bunny with 29

“What a fantastic morning!
I have been hunting for a cycling club for sometime now; one that will suit all our family needs, which
to be honest is a bit of a tall order....
Everyone was so friendly and straight away we all felt that Stoke Cycling Club was the one for us....
Robyn pedalled faster than she has ever pedalled before and not because she was trying to keep up,
Robyn spent most of the time at the front, as the group rode to her pace which made Robyn ride with such
confidence, so lovely to see....
We so enjoyed been out with you guys, Rob has completed the membership form and we hope to join you for the next family ride.
A huge Thank you,
The Obee Family”
We’re heading off east to Clyffe Pypard Youth Hostel for our first UK weekend trip. The hostel is part of a local
village real ale pub, so food and drink are available on the premises, and it’s famous for the warden’s warm welcome.
There’s plenty to see and do, with the scenic Marlborough Downs, a local steam railway and glorious countryside.
There will be a ride down on Friday 27th April, about 50 miles, with stops for refreshments, or you can catch the
train to nearby Chippenham or Swindon and ride from there. Riding back on Monday 30th May. Come for the whole
weekend or just a day or two.
This is a very busy weekend for hostels, so we’ll need to book soon. I’m happy to do a group booking, but I will
need £10 deposits asap from anyone who wants to come. Send a cheque, payable to Stokes Cycling Club, to
Richard Burton, 10 Ormsley Close, Little Stoke, Bristol BS34 6EN.
